During our time with Lewis, the actress covered an array of topics, from her new movie, Hereafter, with Matt Damon, to her daily fight to champion mental health awareness. Here’s an excerpt from that enlightening interview.
You can currently be seen on the big screen working with Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood in Hereafter. How was that experience working with heavy hitters?
I was extremely honored to work with Clint and Matt. It was a very professional set. Clint was tall and classy and he was very smooth. Two words I use to describe Clint are intellect and humanity. He knows how to capture human emotions and put them creatively on the screen. He came up with a story about such an interesting subject, one we have all thought about. This project ranks up there on my list of favorite things that I have done in my career.
Do you see yourself doing more dramatic roles in the future?
I would like to. I think that’s a side of me that has yet to be discovered. I have it within me, and I’m certainly looking forward to using it.
You have used your visibility to talk about mental health, and your bipolar diagnosis. Why has this been a cause that you are so passionate about?
Because I want to fight the negative stigma that is attached to being bipolar … especially within our community. Because of that, people are afraid to go to the doctor and to seek help. Listen; being bipolar is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s something that I am overcoming daily, and I hope to encourage other people to seek the help that they need to treat it as well.
Hereafter is currently in theaters nationwide. –djr
