Battle of the Bands: The Roots to Turn it Up at Red Bull Soundclash

alt src=//rollingout.com/the-test-for-wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/roots web.jpgHip-hop’s beatnik band, The Roots, will battle the Grammy-nominated rock band Shiny Toy Guns during Red Bull Soundclash, a live music conversation between two bands of completely opposing genres on opposite stages, at Tabernacle in Atlanta.

The Grammy-winning, Philly-based septet, The Roots, is known for its eclectic approach to hip-hop, with a touch of jazz, as well as their politically aware lyrics about crime, poverty, guns and drugs that plague the City of Brotherly Love. Shiny Toy Gun’s work is reminiscent of 80’s new wave crossed with strong vocals and loud guitar hooks.alt src=//rollingout.com/the-test-for-wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/shiny toy guns web.jpg

In a series of four rounds, the bands will perform various tasks—some rehearsed, some improvised — to showcase the range of their musical abilities:

1. The Cover: This round will feature each band playing its take on the same cover song.

2.  The Takeover: A collaborative round where one band will start to play one of its original tunes and the other band will have to take over the second half on cue and finish it in its own style.

3.  The Clash: This will challenge the bands’ versatility as they’ll have to adapt their songs to the music genre the DJ is spinning.

4.  The Wild Card: Each band will pick an artist of its choice to come on stage and be a part of the performance.

Red Bull Soundclash is an international series that will be making stops in cities across the globe including: Dallas, Washington D.C., Antwerp, and Zurich. –yvette caslin

The event is Sunday, Nov. 14. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. The show starts at 8:00 p.m.
