Disney’s ‘The Lion King’: ‘Pride’ of the Vegas Strip; Lead Actress Shares Production Notes

altDisney’s The Lion King struck the right chords as an animated film, prompting the creation of a stage play that’s since found a home on Broadway and has toured the country over the last several years. The critically-acclaimed musical production has now taken up residence on the Vegas Strip — adding quite the splash of color to it — at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

What makes Lion King so endearing is not only its message of realizing inner strength, but also the voice it gives to cultural diversity. The story is set on an African savannah and provides a glimpse into the continent’s rich wildlife through masterfully created costumes, heartwarming songs, and a superb cast that reflects the rainbow.

One of The Lion King‘s principal characters, Simba’s lioness pal  and eventual queen, Nala, is portrayed by Kissy (short for Kissimmee, where she was born in Florida) Simmons.  Simmons, who  was part of the inaugural touring company as well on Broadway, spoke with rolling out about what goes on behind the scenes of the production, her role as Nala, and why Lion King is important to Vegas.

What preparation did you have for this demanding role?

I grew up singing in church and playing the organ. I was in plays in high school and … college. By the time I graduated [from] college I was actually performing …

Do you connect with Nala?
… I love the fact that she is female-ferocious and athletic-charming. … I’ve fully embraced the character.

What goes into the costuming?

My corset is fully beaded and heavy. … It takes a lot of maintenance because the show is very physical and the corset beads break all the time …  That’s a part of the magic because if you just change everything to plastic you would lose the magic of the show. It’s all in the detail.

How do your prepare for the physicality?

I … lift weights and run. You have to take care of yourself.

How has the production brought diversity to Vegas?
… The [play has] actual actors from Africa, they speak true African languages. It’s the African culture that is celebrated. … Don’t get caught up in your ideal of Vegas. Vegas has way more to offer than the perception.
