Spoken word artist Lamont Carey took the world by storm when he recited “I Can’t Read” on Russell Simmons’ “Def Poetry Jam” in 2007. In 2008, he gave a riveting address as a keynote speaker for Al Sharpton’s “Close the Gap” education campaign in his hometown, Washington, D.C. In a recent interview with rolling out, Carey talked about the inspiration for his play, Laws of the Street; and book, The Hill, and the rewards of his newfound fame. –dana rettig
How was your play received?
… We received a standing ovation for our work. My cast turned my words into life and the John F. Kennedy Center’s audience loved it. The play, Learning to Be a Mommy, is based [on] my independent TV series “Laws of the STREET.” The series is looking to be picked up by a network now.
What are the rewards of your newfound fame?
I am allowed to create opportunities for other people to begin to fulfill their dreams.
What inspired you to create your foundation?
My goal has always been to create art that empowers communities around the world. My commitment to giving second chances to those who deserve it the most has always been my motivation.
