The cyber world continues to debate the proper response to the shooting death of YouTube provocateur Messy Mya on Sunday, Nov. 14. The debate began when an onlooker decided to take pictures and upload them to Twitter.
As the photo of Messy Mya bleeding to death on a New Orleans sidewalk was retweeted hundreds of times on the popular social networking site, it began to paint a clear picture of the lack of sensitivity created by our insulated cyber existences.
No matter what this young man did while living, the humane act would have been to respect the loss of life, and not take pictures of his final moments. Others disagreed. Our Twitter and Facebook pages were filled with the dissenting opinions of those who felt he deserved no respect. One reader summed it up best:
“People are concerned with the photos that were leaked when they should be concerned with how disrespectful this lil boy was! He truly represented his name — messy! I had no idea who he was but so many young people have been talking about him since his death and it’s sad to say if this is what our young people idolize, they are headed nowhere fast! I’m sorry he lost his life, but someone did [to] him what he was doing all along, pop off!!”
Her perspective is duly noted, and leads us to the question of the day: Should a person’s life dictate the way you treat them in death?
