Imagine this scenario: You’re in an intimate setting of approximately 75 guests, seated at white linen draped tables in an elegantly appointed ballroom of floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a spectacular view of the Potomac River. You indulge in cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and fit-for-royalty service following a day of spa treatment and luxury car test driving. While you’re engaged in this fantasy like setting, singing sensation Kem takes the stage, serenades you with songs from his latest album, Intimacy, and takes you back with megahits like “Love Calls,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “Find Your Way (Back in My Life). It’s confirmed — this must be a dream.
But it really did happen for car enthusiasts on a picture-perfect day at the Touch Me all Over Event at National Harbor just outside of Washington, D.C. The luxury laden day was jointly sponsored by Uptown magazine and Lincoln to roll out the 2011 Lincoln MKX crossover. And before you ask what’s Kem got to do with it, here’s what he had to say.
What brings you to the D.C. area?
I’m here to perform for my fans in the Washington, D.C., area and people who appreciate the Lincoln MKS. The Ford brand is in Detroit and they reached out to us to assist them in marketing this vehicle in various … ways. … My iPod is hooked up to my car like it is in the MKX, and that’s really important. You can’t believe the range from Cameo to David Bowie to Jill Scott to Sting to Anthony Hamilton. But with MyLincoln Touch driver connection technology I’m able to change genres and adjust settings just by saying the words. … You could say there is a chemistry here.
Speaking of words, why do your songs resonate so well with listeners, especially women?
I try to say in my songs things that men don’t know how to say or are not willing to say, but those are the things that women need to hear. I was [a] die-hard romantic and looking to be in love and I was interested in women a whole bunch and relationships were important to me. Being a man, I know that it can be difficult to communicate, but it’s so necessary in a relationship.
Whether it was Kem, the music, the car, the spa treatment, the scenery or just that the stars aligned in the heavens, the Uptown/Lincoln Touch Me All Over Event was an evening of premiums and classic style in a surreal setting. –roz edward
