Kevin Hart Show Review: Sex, Parenting and Laughing Away the Pain

Make you laugh? You bet he will. Make you think? You bet he will. Eighty percent of the audience loved every joke Kevin Hart made during his standup routine while on one of his Laugh at My Pain comedy tour stops. The show starts with a bang. He gives new meaning to sex live on stage. The subject of women is the show’s dominating topic and the shock value was high. The way he described sex, it was almost rhythmic and quite intelligent. For the people that were wearing their conservative attitudes and who resist conversations about sex and domestic violence, it was to their chagrin. He shared his pain and gave it to us raw. Raw is good.

Kevin spoke openly about his experience, his father and his famous tag line: “all right, all right, all right” was the chorus.

Corey Holcomb talked about being a player and an abuser. He calls women everything from “dumb piece of trash” to telling them “you should know better. Up front, I tell you that I am the worst. You shouldn’t even curse me out because I told you that I was bad for you from the start.”

Kevin Hart is a witty, brilliant and fascinating young comedian and actor who lets the audience know that we are all related in some way; either cousins or brothers born to different mother and fathers.

When I asked him how he was able to do what he does, he says it is because he studied. He studied the greats — Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy — and he knew all of their routines, which he reflected on when he went on stage.

This was my first Kevin Hart comedy show experience. It was a breath of fresh air to see a comedian with a Nike Air Jordan and an eBay endorsement. He’s clearly destined to be a rapidly shooting star headed to a bigger stage and filling arenas. A fact made obvious by the evening’s sold-out show.

The community was definitely there for him and they could relate and knew exactly where he was coming from. Kevin and Corey tested us to see if were really still a community. The answer is a resounding yes.

For those of us who are hypocritical about everything black and all we want is politics, too bad. No politics tonight, just sex live on stage that was welcomed with rousing applause. We all need to take breaks to enjoy a good laugh at least several times. I felt good about it.

A special thanks to Kevin for giving the tickets to me. –munson steed
