California Elects State's First African American Attorney General, Kamala Harris

It’s official. Kamala Harris is the new Attorney General in California. In a political slugfest with Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley, Harris managed to pull off a last-minute win just in time for Thanksgiving.

It took 22 days to determine a winner, but as the ballot counting progressed, San Francisco District Attorney Harris was not only named the victor by media outlets and prominent politicians, she held on to a slim, but steadily increasing lead on election night. Reports claim that “Cooley had called it early for himself, and then got up the next morning to discover his opponent had taken the lead.”

Harris is currently making history as the first female and first African American to hold the office of Attorney General of California. A popular candidate, she was featured in The New York Times on “Oprah,” “The David Letterman Show,” and received public endorsements from first lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and actress Kerry Washington.
