Father Dollar Bill Gives C-Notes to Homeless in Los Angeles; Scrutinized for Enabling Drug and Alco

alt

The 91-year old Rev. Maurice Chase a.k.a “Father Dollar Bill” has been spreading the holiday cheer for the last 24 years by handing out cash money to homeless residents of downtown Los Angeles’ ‘Skid Row.’ This week, the reverend gave out $15,000 with the first 10 people in wheelchairs getting $100 and the others in line getting $20 or less.

KTLA reports that the money Father Chase donates comes from Mrs. Bob Hope, Mrs. Frank Sinatra, Bob Newhart, Eli Broad, Vin Scully and many others. Although a kind gesture and what has become an annual tradition, Father Dollar Bill receives a lot of criticism from individuals who believe that he is willingly putting money into the wrong hands.

This is what he told the L.A. Times in response:

“People in line often tell me how they’ll spend it — on hamburgers, ice cream and other treats they can’t get at the shelters. I know they’re as likely to spend it on booze and drugs. But I don’t care. That’s not the point. The point is to show them that they are not forgotten …”

Is it wise to put cold hard cash into the hands of those with a propensity toward drug abuse and alcoholism in the name of good will?  Share your thoughts. –marqueta smith
