In South Carolina, a gruesome child brutality case was uncovered. An 18-month-old boy is in critical condition after he was hanged by his ankles in a closet and repeatedly beaten by three teenagers according to authorities.
The astonishing fact is that the child’s mother, Shakera Wright, allowed the beating to occur and has subsequently been charged.
Police were called to a hospital Tuesday when the mother brought her son, Louis, in with wounds to his face and body. Louis Wright is listed in critical condition with five rib fractures; lacerations to his liver, spleen and pancreas; and bruises to his chest, back and abdomen. Doctors also discovered an old skull fracture that had healed.
Arrest warrants say the oldest teen admitted the abuse, calling it wrestling. The mother also informed a social worker the teens “play-wrestled” with her son and that she allowed them to hit her son until she told them to stop.
North Charleston police charged Wright, 18, of Charleston; and Tyrek D. Varnes, 16, of North Charleston, with infliction or allowing infliction of great bodily injury to a child. Both face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
Varnes is being charged as an adult. The names of the two juveniles involved, ages 14 and 15, have not been released. They are in the custody of of the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice.
