Texas Man Injured When Droid Smartphone Explodes

They say that cell phones are safe aaltnd their usage is not harmful, even with respect to radio waves. However, we would likely get a different story from a north Texas man regarding this concept.

Aron Embry of Cedar Hill, Texas, said he had just finished a call when he heard a loud “pop.” Apparently, his cell phone exploded while he was using it and according to Embry and witnesses, his ear started to bleed.

He was treated for his injury in the emergency room at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Glass fragments from the exploding phone cut the side of Embry’s face and ear. He required four stitches but did not suffer any hearing loss.

There are still no details on what actually caused the Droid 2 to explode, but Motorola has issued the following statement: “Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety. We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly.”

The Motorola Droid smartphone apparently shattered but it still appears to be functioning, and its battery was intact. Embry and his family plan to contact the phone’s manufacturer and Verizon about the incident.

This is not the first time an exploding phone has been documented. A few months ago, a 23-year-old man died after his phone exploded in North India. A few years ago in Wyoming, a 19-year-old suffered second- to third-degree burns while sleeping, when her phone, which was charging near her, caught fire. In China, a 27-year-old housewife’s cell phone exploded and killed her while she was talking to her husband.
