It is no secret that I am a fan of all things technological. I tweet and use Facebook constantly and thanks to Hulu, I watch most television shows on my laptop or iPad.
I believe that most people nowadays, young or old, use technology for everyday tasks like e-mailing photos to loved ones, paying bills and even ordering a pizza. So it was no surprise to see that churches are starting to take advantage of new technologies to spread the gospel to the masses.
When you think about it, the church has embraced technology throughout history. Microphones, guitars, lighting and video projectors are so common that people have come to expect them at church services. Now, there are newer technologies that will make even bigger contributions to the evolution of the black church. Websites, social networking via Facebook, and texting on cell phones are just to few name a few.
Usually, when you join a church you’re required to take part in a new member’s class, and if you don’t pay attention to the church announcements or bulletins, then you may miss the class. But now some churches request that new members join their e-mail databases, which direct them to online class registration.
And, if that wasn’t enough to keep you connected, other churches are developing their own apps for watching live streams of church services and even archives of past sermons. And if you forget to bring your Bible to church no problem, just download the Bible app on your phone or iPad and you can pull up any Scripture from any book quicker than flipping through pages.
Even when it comes to paying tithes and offerings, the new modern church has you covered. Conveniently located in some church lobbies are electronic payment machines that offer the congregation an alternative method for church donations.
