Most Americans will never forget how West put Bush on blast for his pathetically and inexcusably slow response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which annihilated much of New Orleans, particularly most of the Lower Ninth Ward where blacks predominated. It is considered the worst natural disaster in the history of our country.
Unfortunately for the millions who agreed with Kanye, he publicly recanted those comments after Bush wrote that the embarrassing episode was the worst moment in his administration in his new book Decision Points. Jay-Z doesn’t believe Kanye has anything to apologize for.
“I 100 percent agreed with the comments that he made, because again … it felt like it was being done to black people,” Jay-Z told the Associated Press. “Like all you saw on the news was black people with help signs and all this stuff, and then you have this picture of the commander in chief, who we all rely on, just flying by.”
And I agree with Hov. Bush was in the White House during the cataclysmic Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that killed 3,000 people and toppled one of America‘s most iconic landmarks, the World Trade Center. This is a man who wrongfully and wantonly instigated the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, using extremely questionable CIA documents that falsely stated weapons of mass destruction were present in Iraq. And this was a president who was mentally absent during the historic collapse of the nation’s economy (spurred by corporate greed, predatory mortgage lending and corruption at Enron, Worldcom and other companies). Then there was Katrina. To have this single Kanye statement be called the worst aspect of Bush’s presidency is dumbfounding and abominable.
Bush answered Kanye’s statement during a promotional for Decision Points. “My record was strong I felt when it came to race relations and giving people a chance. And — it was a disgusting moment,” Bush told the press.
Jay-Z, who ushered Kanye West into the international spotlight through Roc-A-Fella Records, torched Bush for allowing Kanye’s comments to get his underwear in a bunch.
“Just the fact that he thinks that the worst thing that happened to him is Kanye saying something about him. Like, what? That alone shows you where his mind is. Are you kidding me?” Jay-Z said.
Bush’s statement gives Americans a clue into the thinking of a man who should never have held high office. And it also clues you into how this country got into the catastrophic mess that it is in — that Obama is now trying to mop up. –terry shropshire
