New Yorkers Talk About Their Best (and Worst) Christmas Gifts at Harlem’s Holiday Lights Ceremony

More than Christmas lights were shining brightly at the Harlem Holiday Lights Ceremony held on Dec. 7, 2010, at the Harlem State Office Building. Equally radiant were the smiles of the people in the crowd as many gathered to celebrate the lighting of Harlem’s renowned thoroughfare from the East River to the Hudson River. The event, which was produced by the 125th Street Business Improvement District and Manhattan Community Boards 9, 10 and 11, inspired everyone to get into the holiday spirit. Holiday party tips: “Try to incorporate everyone whether they believe in Christmas or not, and [make sure] that they have fun as well.”

Favorite Christmas gift: “An old film camera I got one year from my parents that I used a lot.”
Most memorable Christmas: “My grandmother had just died and she was the glue that held us together. Even after my grandmother passed we got together and had a wonderful dinner and enjoyed the family company.”
Holiday party tips: “Anyway to fit in tacky sweaters is a good thing, so capitalize on tacky sweater time.”
