Tron: Legacy Poised to Reach New and Familiar Colorless Fan Base; YaYa DaCosta Makes Sci Fi Debut

Tron: Legacy, hits theaters, today. This long awaited sequel to Disney’s Sci Fi classic, Tron, is poised to usher in a new “colorless” fan base, as well as satisfying those of us that were fascinated as children by the original.

Here are five reasons to see Tron: Legacy.

5. The visually-stunning technological world of Tron itself. The original film was released during the height of coin-op arcades, which had the attention of black, white, yellow and brown patrons. You could almost say it helped bolster the popularity of video games. Back then, Tron was a visual odyssey. The glowing geometric landscape took us to a world we had never seen. It teased our imagination and opened our eyes to the possibility of the existence of a world within our very own computers. The new movie has set the bar even higher. The visuals are quite stunning and they sport a very sleak and refined look with enhanced neon lighting and special digital effects. This futuristic world should appeal to any and every fan of the genre.

4. The action sequences. Disney has done well in giving the action a much needed boost. Within the original story there were scenes that became instant classics, such as the light cycle battle. Though the battle sequences may seem tame in comparison to what is possible now, back when we first entered Tron’s digital domain, they were a sight to behold. With today’s technology, there are plenty of new “wow” moments to behold.

3. Fate of the original characters.  Why is Flynn missing? Is the character Tron himself still a part of the story? These and many other questions yearn to be answered. We have longed to see the next chapter for Tron. The leaps taken, with such feats as the technical attempts to mimic real actors are fascinating.

2. The overall story. It was odd that the original film was named after a character that was not the primary focus of the movie. Tron seemed to take on more of a side role. Even now in Tron Legacy, we still find ourselves focused on Flynn and his son and the trials of a user overcoming his own creation. But it was always a unique plot, with a human interacting with computer programs that act and react with human intentions and emotions. Tron’s spectacular world is sure to pique enthusiast’s interests, with enough bite to even grab newbies.

1. Nostalgia. I grew up during the time when films like Tron and Star Wars were the greatest things since sliced bread. Anyone who has experienced those thrills will appreciate the opportunity to relive a bit of that old movie magic. Tron Legacy lives up to those standards.

*And as an honorable mention, YaYa DaCosta of America’s Next Top Model fame, makes her sci-fi debut.  A small role, but a good foot in the door for landing future roles in films of this typically blockbusting genre.

Though we can’t predict what will happen in the coming months for Tron: Legacy, it has the elements to spark the interest of not only Tron-heads, but adults that are new to the story and their kids and grandkids alike. It’s evident that technology now rules the world and is completely color and age blind, so seeing this film should be a treat for all. -stephan radford
