President Barack Obama signed H.R. 6118, the “Dorothy Height Bill,” on Dec. 15, 2010, in the presence of members of Congress, former Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman and members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. The bill designates the U.S. Postal Service located at 2 Massachusetts Avenue, NE, Washington, D.C., as the Dorothy I. Height Post Office.
A civil rights icon, Dr. Dorothy Height dedicated her life to service. She was the chair emerita of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and past national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. In 2004, she was the recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and in 1994, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She passed away on April 20, 2010. –yvette caslin
