The late, beloved soul singer Teena Marie will be cremated, according to her wishes. Fortunately for her many fans, there will be a public memorial sometime in the new year, says publicist Lynn Allen Jeter. This will follow a private service for family members and close friends.

The transcendent music pioneer, who rapped verses in songs like “Square Biz” before Lady Gaga and Ke$ha were even born, made being wild and eccentric cool long before Madonna rolled up on the set. On her last album, Teena wrote a song called “Black Cool” for President Barack Obama. This shouldn’t surprise her most loyal fans, for Teena once called herself a “black artist with white skin” and lived her life that way.

The acclaimed singer, musician and producer died “peacefully in her sleep,” according to her 19 year-old daughter, Alia Rose, after the two enjoyed a wonderful Christmas together, reports eurweb.com. –terry shropshire

While there’s no firm date set for the public memorial service, fans can send condolences to the following address:
