You have been performing for a very long time. How do you keep your love for the music fresh and current?
I have an innate passion for music. Music is really a part of who I am, and who I will always be. … No matter where you are in the world, what language you may speak, or what your cultural traditions are, all people respond to and celebrate life through music. That’s why music will continue to be my first love.
You’ve just written, arranged, and produced your first album titled, Dancing in the Window. How does this title reflect the album?
“Dancing in the Window” happens to be one of my favorite songs on the CD. I love the song because it is fun, energetic, and a reflection of my appreciation for jazz music. … I wanted to inspire people to feel free to dance. People are always happy when they’re dancing.
You have played alongside some of the nation’s finest musical talent. Do you have any features on this album?
I’m very honored that one of the nation’s premier smooth jazz saxophonists, Tom Braxton, agreed to be featured on the CD. He is playing a duet with me on the title track, Dancing in the Window. Bobby Sparks, who has played for Kirk Franklin, Marcus Miller, Lalah Hathaway, and other great artists, played on several songs on the project, and is featured on “Better Days,” which is a song I wrote that calls on us to be more socially and environmentally conscious. Eric Willis, Jason Thomas, Chad Brawley and Andrea Wallace are other fabulous artists that were featured on this project. All of them helped make this project amazing.
What did you learn from playing with other artists?
I learned a great deal about the process of recording. A lot of people do not realize all the hard work and knowledge that one must possess to record and produce a professional level CD. I’m thankful for all of the artists and producers that shared their insight with me. Now, I am learning about the marketing and promotion side of having a CD. There is still much more to discover.
