New Friends or the Same Old Story?

New Friends or the Same Old Story? For many there are those who are not going to make a new friend any time this year.
They go around wondering and having new fears,
“What should I share with someone new that they didn’t know?”
Really what it is — is have you continued to grow?
There is no way that your old friends who are not doing anything new,
Have anything new to share with you.
No, if that person hasn’t gotten a promotion to this day,
There’s a reason they’re staying in place and not moving in any way.
If you’re not moving up, you’re definitely moving down
And that is not a good idea, nor is it sound.

To stay with the same people as you walk your entire life
You’ve got parents and loved ones that you carry in your stride
But at the same time that you choose  professional and emotional growth
It requires that you plant new seeds and new friends have to grow
There are places to go and industry meetings to take
And make not that often harrowing mistake
Of not moving and not growing yourself each and every day
And that includes adding a new friend in a particular way.
How could this be possible? Who would know who that should be?
Well, a mentor is good way to embark on that journey
That person who has retired after years in the industry you know
Who has been on those boards and has a network that you can grow
And make your own with the seeds you sow
Make them proud of you so they’ll applaud
And stand to support you in your cause.
Grow, grow, grow your social status and volunteer each day
And cultivate a civic friendship along the way
Then you’ll say “We support this idea” and it may
Lead to a band of individuals who are like-minded
And think like you do
And you’ll have that new friend who promises too
To do the things that make for a better world
For those in need.

The hungry and the sick will reap the benefit
Of common bonds and common causes
That you and you new friend both get.
Then neither will you have to worry about taking a pause
For you will have taken the time to make moving ahead
And then you will know that old friendships without new dimensions
May not be helpful, no matter how well intentioned
And you will have left them behind and moved ahead
And forward to make a new friend instead

Check into a new friendship and see what you can do
To make someone’s life better than the day before
There is somebody ready and willing to open their friendship door
So don’t stop, don’t pause, don’t hesitate or delay
There’s somebody waiting to be a new friend to you and to me.

So take a pause right now and read a good book or two
Join a book club, they’ll tell you what to do
You’ll meet people who share an appreciation for literature
Humanities and perhaps the arts too
And that’s where you need to be
So plant that seed, and make that friend
for you and for me.
So now that we’ve decided what we’re going to do
We have to examine the skill set that we want to improve too.
“Hola,” “Que tal” and “Parlez-vous Français”
So grow your vocabulary in an international way
Let’s communicate with the citizens of the world
And to hear what they have to say
Is so important in every way.
Develop your capacity to communicate in bigger and better ways

The tapestry is woven inside your mind
The circuitry is there by design
So don’t delay
Start learning a new language today
And build a new friendship that will help in that way
You are trying to make a way for the entire world to speak to one day
So now that you’ve contemplated new friendships and why
Think about the one you must nurture inside
The one that you play music for when you’re alone
And the one you read Scripture to while on the phone
read the poetry that you’ve written down
The one that you really have to take care of and be a friend too
Is the one that lives inside of you.

Take care of the person and be a friend to yourself in a special way.
You can grow
Start today, let go of yesterday and move on.
Be the best friend to yourself
I, myself and me.

Peace. –Munson Steed
