Playwright David Talbert Brings Latest Literary Coup to the Stage: 'What My Husband Doesn't Know'

David E. Talbert is one of the highest grossing and most recognizable brands in the world of touring comedies and musicals, and, yet, he is really humble and somewhat shy in person. Early one chilly, sunny morning in Atlanta before a taping of “The Mo’Nique Show,” RO interviewed Talbert at the Loews Hotel about life, love and his passion for the literary craft.

The Morgan State University graduate is also on the fast track to Hollywood, currently writing and developing a sitcom for Fox and casting the follow-up to his Sony Pictures film debut, First Sunday, starring Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan and Katt Williams. The Los Angeles Times has heralded Talbert as “one of the most prolific theatre makers in America,” having had 12 critically-acclaimed tours breaking box office records nationwide and delighting millions of fans across the globe.

His current work, What My Husband Doesn’t Know, stars  Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child), Brian J. White (“Men of a Certain Age”), Ann Nesby (Sounds of Blackness) and Clifton Davis (“Amen”). According to Talbert, it is “a story about paying attention and taking care of the person that you are with and not being so busy rushing out the front door that you leave room for someone to come in through the back door.

“This story is more of a cautionary tale to men to pay attention to your women and, for women, to pay attention to your men, so that you don’t leave room for someone else to come into your relationship. It’s my version of a reverse ‘Fatal Attraction.’”

Talbert has won an NAACP award (The Fabric of a Man) and the New York Literary Award (Love in the Nick of Tyme). Though his fans have been anxiously awaiting the next production, Talbert understands that being a part of the entertainment industry and being successful means staying balanced.

“The industry is a marathon and not a sprint. So, I take my time to make sure that what I put out is quality work and that I’m not in a rush,” says the soft-spoken playwright. It has been 20 years since the writer-director-author started his career and has made audiences fall in love with his plays.

“Doing something that you love and would do for free, yet you’re earn a living is my definition of success, and I have been so blessed to know that my work touches and affects people.” –christa e. jackson
