Veteran actor and rapper Ice Cube is returning to high school for his next film role. The rapper is currently in negotiations with Sony Pictures to join the cast of the big screen adaptation of the classic TV show “21 Jump Street.”

The popular FOX crime drama series aired from the late ’80s through the early ’90s and centered around a squad of youthful looking undercover cops who infiltrated high schools, colleges and teen scenes, stopping criminal activity.

altAs reported by deadline.com, in the film, which will also star actors Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, Cube would play the role of precinct captain Adam Fuller, while Tatum and Hill would play undercover cops.

The original series also starred actress Holly Robinson-Peete as undercover officer Judith “Judy” Hoffs, and launched her television career as well as the career of film superstar Johnny Depp.  No word yet as to who will be cast in the role of Hoffs or if the role will even be reprised.

Shooting for 21 Jump Steet is set to begin in late April with a tentative 2012 release date.
