Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2011 Show During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

altDesigner Ralph Lauren takes a trip to the Far East and returns home so inspired that he recreates his experience in his Fall 2011 Collection. During the Ralph Lauren Fall 2011 Collection Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show, the first model to emerge was a fresh-faced Sui He from China. In fashion circles, she was the most talked about model because this occasion marks the first time in recent history that the House cast a newcomer to open a show.

The flaming red and coral lipsticked models flounced down the black-lacquered runway to the tunes of David Bowie and Iggy Pop’s seductively adventurous ’80’s pop anthem “China Girl.”  alt
Vogue magazine contributing editor André Leon Talley tells theluxist.com about the collection. “… from tuxedo skirts to women in pantsuits with dressing gowns embroidered like Oriental screens, was just magnificent,” he said. “I loved his shapes, I loved the sense of jewel colors. The ruby, smoking one button jacket with the fur and notched collar was fabulous. The most amazing thing was the bugle beaded pajama pants suit.”

Talley added, “This collection reminds me of Shanghai Express, which is one of the most fabulous films ever with the greatest lighting and with the overtones of art deco elegance that is much needed in fashion. We need to have this kind of elegance. If Marlene Dietrich were alive, she would be shopping here.”

What’s in the Collection:

Glossy smoking jackets, shearling coat with silk embroidery, velvet quilted jacket, a pinstripe 3-piece suit: jacket, matching vest and trousers, a black short haircalf motorcycle jacket, wing-collared shirts and gowns, a glossy crewneck sweater, a fluid silk romper, silk-and-velvet jodhpur pants, beaded and embroidered evening gowns.
Accents and Accessories:
Red velvet twisted peep-toe heels, cystal-monogrammed clutches, and a black suede belt with diamante and chevron buckle
Some of the pieces had an Art Deco feel and others Chinoserie (the bright dragon embroidery covering the shearling jacket). Most extraordinary was the silver halter gown complemented by a silver beaded hood. –yvette caslin
