Trey Songz Being Sued For $18 Million Over Hit, ‘Bottoms Up’

Trey Songz may still be riding the waves of success from his hit song “Bottoms Up” with Nicki Minaj, but a Washington, D.C., production company is now claiming they should own the rights to the song and are suing Songz, his manager, Gee Roberson, Atlantic Records, Kodak, producer Kane Beatz and others for $18 million dollars.

As reported by allhiphop.com, the lawsuit was filed Feb. 2 in the Southern District of New York by Derrick Price, Doc Mob Records and iHipHopMusic.

In the lawsuit, Doc Mob claims that he hired producer Milton James, aka “Tony Scales,” to produce the original, copyrighted track for “Bottoms Up” for his company, Doc Mob Records. Price and Doc Mob also allege that the track was originally produced by James in Price’s home studio.

Eventually, James teamed up with Young Money producer Kane Beatz, who added production elements to the song before it was used by Songz and Minaj.

The dispute stems from the claim that, although James produced the majority of the track, Kane Beatz was listed as the sole producer of the track on Songz’s latest album, Passion, Pain & Pleasure.

Price alleges that he persistently sent cease-and-desist letters to both Atlantic Records and Songz, but to no avail. The production company added Kodak to the lawsuit because of their use of the song in their “So Kodak” commercial campaign.

Neither Trey Songz nor any of the other defendants in the lawsuit have commented on the case.
