Savion Glover Masters the Beat in New Show, ‘SoLo in TiME’

Savion Glover Masters the Beat in New Show, 'SoLo in TiME'Moments after entering the Lehman College Performance Arts Center stage, Savion Glover began to tap slowly. His feet produced low tones that were as subtle as a knock on a door.

He was soon joined by Gabriel Hermida who began to strum the Spanish guitar. Without missing a beat, Glover’s feet intertwined perfectly with Hermida’s guitar. His tapping intensified and created thunderous sounds that were as forceful as a Djembe drum. Glover tapped masterful compositions for two hours without intermission. It was a genius at work.

Since the beginning of 2011, Glover has toured the nation with his show, SoLo in TiME. Along with Hermida, Glover is assisted by Marshall Davis Jr.(tapper),  Francesco Beccaro (guitarist), and Carmen Estevez (vocalist and box drum).

After the show, Davis spoke with rolling out and provided insight on the show.

“This is a show that deals with tap dancing and flamenco style music,” he said. “We are bringing the two together and allowing them both to be themselves and exist at the same time with its own individual uniqueness.”

Glover also revealed his thoughts on the show in an earlier statement.

“What many people do not understand is that tap is percussion,” Glover said. “While there are traditional hoofer rhythms — each moment, each brush to the floor, is an expressive poetry individual to each dancer’s internal voice. Similarly, flamenco is a very passionate and emotional rhythmic dance.” –amir shaw
