Montel Williams’ drug paraphernalia charge has been dropped. Williams was detained briefly in January at a Milwaukee airport when a routine search turned up a pipe commonly used for smoking marijuana. He admits that he legally uses marijuana to treat chronic pain caused by multiple sclerosis. A Milwaukee County judge dismissed the case on April 12. The district attorney made the request after the pipe tested negative for the drug. Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern stated, “We concluded that this case was not provable.”
Williams is participating in an experimental treatment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but lives in New York. He said he forgot the pipe was in his bag and apologized for inconveniencing airport security, deputies and the court.
Williams explained, “This isn’t about somebody trying to do something illicit. I’m really just trying to take my medication. Hopefully, this issue and this incident will spark some conversations that will help more rational minds find a way to solve the problem and take the patients off the battlefield.” He added that he is grateful to put this episode behind him. –a. robinson
