For the first time in its 10-year history, “American Idol” has invited (or accepted, depending on how they select their guests) a gospel singer to grace its coveted stage. Kirk Franklin, one of the most popular gospel performers in the world and whose music has crossed over several genres and generations, will sing his current No. 1 hit song, “Smile.”
Performing on “Idol” is a wonderful opportunity for the versatile performer to showcase his talents to the small percentage of people who may have never heard of him and bring them a message of hope, peace, inspiration and love.
The age-defying 41-year-old gospel artist, Fort Worth, Texas, native and lifetime performer has won nearly every music award that exists, has set and broken records and has developed a signature sound and reputation that has lasted more than 20 years.
After Franklin’s “American Idol” performance, it will not be a surprise if “Smile,” the first release from his latest album, Hello Fear, has a second wave of popularity and sell out at stores around the country. –arnell pharr
