Roger Bobb, Tyler Perry Studios’ longtime supervising producer and executive vice president, has left the building after producing nearly a dozen films with Tyler Perry along with hundreds of episodes of their TBS sitcoms.
Tyler Perry Studios has experienced a major shake-up. Roger Bobb, the man who produced all of the famous Madea-related films, will now exercise his creative powers autonomously from his new production laboratory, Bobbcat Films, on the other side of the ATL.
In a move that caused whiplash and jaws to drop, including those whose tentacles of influence reach throughout the entertainment industry, Bobb sent an email to the employees of TPS officially announcing his resignation.
“Today will be my last day at Tyler Perry Studios. It has been an incredible seven years and I would like to thank Tyler Perry, The Tyler Perry Studios staff, Lionsgate, TBS, Debmar/Mercury and especially the hundreds of cast and crew members that I have had the honor and privilege of working with during my amazing time here. Eleven films, 222 episodes of “House Of Payne” and 140 episodes of “Meet The Browns” — what a blessing! …”
Bobb, a much-sought-after producer and director, will not be collecting Social Security, to be sure. He has opened Bobbcat Films in a plush environment in the upscale Buckhead section of Atlanta.
“I’m elated to announce that beginning Tuesday, May 31, I will begin a new chapter as president of Bobbcat Films, my new film and television production company. I look forward to continuing to work with all of you soon. Thank you and God bless,” he said.
The abruptness of the departure has a few unanswered questions dancing on people’s brains. And the question hung heavily in the air like summer humidity when I spoke briefly with the multitalented movie maven. But the low-key Bobb rationed his words when he spoke about the motivation behind his departure and what creative projects are pouring out of that fertile wellspring of a mind.
In any event, Bobb will not be stalled idly on the curb of life as Hollywood continues to streak down the left lane. –terry shropshire
