Dr. Maya Angelou’s “reputation as a world-renowned poet, her attention to the young people and the courage she illustrated as a young person overcoming obstacles” has garnered her the honor of having a teen center dedicated in her name, according to Sonija Young, wife of Walter Young.

Young and her family consider Dr. Angelou a dear friend and a part of their family. They’re elated that the Maya Angelou Teen Center, which is more than three years in the making, is coming to life. The fundraising actually kicked off in 2008 at Dr. Angelou’s 80th birthday celebration.

The grand opening ceremony will be held this Saturday, June 18, 2011, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This also marks a good time individuals and families to become members of the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA.

Young offers, “We [are] simply the best. It’s a family-oriented organization. We have the largest wellness center and a brand new teen center that places a strong emphasis on the performing arts.”

The center will include a performing arts space, cyber-café, computer lab and boutique and will house the YMCA’s numerous teen programs, including their summer camp. –yvette caslin
