At the 2011 BET Awards, singer Chris Brown once again found himself making headlines for being the biggest winner of the evening as well as being the center of attention when a trophy was mistakenly awarded to the wrong artist. Now, BET’s president of music programming, Stephen Hill, has apologized for the mistake, saying it was a simple case of “human error.”
The mix-up occurred when “106 & Park” hosts Terrence J and Rocsi brought contest winner Tiffany Green onstage to announce the winner of the Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award. Reading from the tablet PC, as all of the presenters of the night had done, Green initially announced that Chris Brown had won the award, but then backtracked and announced instead that Drake and Rihanna were the winners for their song ‘What’s My Name?”
After taking the stage to accept the award, a clearly puzzled Drake remarked, “Well, this is awkward.”
However, it was later discovered that Brown was indeed the intended winner and toward the end of the night, BET rectified the situation when they brought Brown on stage to accept the award.
Following the blunder, Green took to Twitter to share her utter embarrassment and shame over the incident.
“Bawling backstage. They totally f—ed me up,” tweeted Green.
Further clearing up the mix-up, Hill also visited Twitter and revealed that he was to blame for the incident.
“That BET Awards Viewers’ Choice mix-up was due to human error,” he said in a tweet. “And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected,” tweeted Hill.
Well, kudos to Hill for taking responsibility for the mistake. Perhaps, next year BET will forego the flashy yet faulty gadgets and go back to announcing the winners via envelope.
