It’s been nearly a decade since the music world was rocked by the sudden and untimely death of critically acclaimed singer-actress Aaliyah. And with the 10th anniversary of her death near, BET recently announced that they plan to honor the late singer with a tribute next month.
The network made the announcement via their official Twitter page on Wednesday, July 20.
“W/ the 10th anniv of Aaliyah’s passing approaching, we’re airing Romeo Must Die today at 8P/7C. Stay tuned for a tribute special next month!” tweeted BET.
While details about the televised tribute still have yet to be revealed, any program honoring the talented singer would be warmly welcomed.
Throughout her all-too-short career, Aaliyah, with the help of mega-producers like R. Kelly, Timbaland and Missy Elliott, reshaped the landscape of R&B and pop with her genre-bending music, leaving a legacy of sound that still resonates among music’s current crop of young sirens.
Aaliyah’s life was tragically cut short on Aug. 25, 2001, when, shortly after filming her final video, “Rock The Boat,” the singer and several members of her team were killed when her private plane crashed in the Bahamas.
We’ll keep you informed about the tribute as more news develops. –nicholas robinson
