R. Kelly Speaks After Throat Surgery: 'I Will Be Back'

R. Kelly’s career seemed in jeopardy last month after it was reported that the Love Letter singer had undergone emergency throat surgery to drain a painful tonsil abscess. Now, weeks later, Kelly is speaking publicly for the first time since his surgery ordeal.

In video released by Kelly on Tuesday, Aug. 9, the singer, still wearing a hospital face mask after undergoing surgery, explains to fans that the procedure went off without a hitch.

“Yo what’s up, y’all, it’s your boy Kellz, fresh out the hospital. Just want to say thanks to my fans for supporting me. I want to say thanks to all the prayer warriors out there for supporting me,” he said. “Doctors say the surgery went well. I know it doesn’t look like it, but it did.”

Last month, Kelly’s spokesman said that the singer would be on an indefinite hiatus until he was fully recovered, leaving many to wonder if he would ever return to the music scene. However, Kelly assures fans that he’ll be back at work on a new album, soon enough.

“I will be back. I know it’s a lot of negativity out there. Please don’t believe the hype,” said Kelly. “As soon as I get a chance, I’m going back in the studio to work on my next album.”

Hopefully, Kelly will continue on the path to a speedy recovery. –nicholas robinson
