This only her fourth tournament back from injuries on the WTA tour, Drake may have been just the muse she needed as she had to scrap like a junkyard dog to ultimately take down a feisty 5-foot-4 Jie Zheng of China, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. There were plenty of intense moments during the match and the camera kept panning over to Serena’s box, with Drake front and center, appearing as if he were willing her to the victory she eventually secured. The win will set her up to face either 2011 Roland Garros winner, Francesca Schiavone of Italy or Czechoslovakia’s Lucie Safarova on Friday.
If Serena Willams’ MO is based on the “Common template,” Drake would certainly fit the bill: fair skinned … check; rapper … check; laid-back personality … check; supportive of her tennis career … check. We’ll see what the future holds.
