Detroit Freedom Institute Holds Annual Freedom Weekend, Featuring Rev. Al Sharpton and Others

Detroit Freedom Institute kicks-off one of it’s signature and most successful events on Wednesday Aug. 17 at the Motor City Casino Hotel. Freedom Weekend X  rivaled only by the annual Freedom Fund dinner and the 2007 National Convention (when the Detroit Branch hosted), will feature discussions and workshops with notable African Americans from all corners of the nation in business, civic, academic and religious sectors to develop strategies for success in an increasingly challenging social and economic environment.

“It s a mega-weekend of ‘edu-tainment.’ Education for the head and entertainment for the soul” says, Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, the organizations founder and chair.
In a city that is erroneously touted for its alleged lack of shine, but is widely recognized for it’s commitment to civil rights and social causes, supporters of any uncomely criticism will have a hard time convincing participants at the Freedom Weekend X (Aug. 17 – Aug. 20)that the city’s future is a foregone conclusion.

On Wednesday, Aug. 18, in the Sound Board at the opulent Motor City Casino Hotel Conference will host notable African Americans from all corners of the nation when they convene for the Freedom Weekend X opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“We work with a number of community groups and corporate supporters to increase awareness about important issues that affect the quality of life in our communities, our urban cities, and our nation. We believe that collaboration is the key to building strong communities, investing in the future of our youth, and creating opportunities that enrich the lives and prosperity of each and every one of us,” explains Anthony.

The “One Family, One People, One House” event’s highlights will include; a national religious leaders luncheon, a national labor leaders breakfast, a national town hall meeting, a 3K health walk and a career and youth day summit. Nationally recognized human rights advocate, president and founder of the National Action Network and former U.S. presidential candidate, Rev. Al Sharpton, will deliver the keynote address on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the national Town Hall Meeting to be held at 5 p.m. at the Motor City Casino Hotel and Conference center.
