Drake has earned a bevy of accolades over the past year, including four Grammy nominations, two Juno awards, and recently, a Songwriters Hall of Fame award. And now, the Toronto native is being honored with an award from Canada’s Walk of Fame.
According to a press release issued on Monday, Aug. 15, Drake will receive the Allan Slaight Award from Canada’s Walk of Fame, becoming only the second person to receive the honor, which is awarded to young Canadians making a difference “in the fields of music, film, literature, visual or performing arts, sports, innovation or philanthropy.”
“I am a proud Canadian, and I am grateful to Canada’s Walk of Fame and the Slaight Foundation for this award,” said Drake in the press release.
As a part of his honor, the Thank Me Later rapper will receive a $10,000 honorarium, which he’ll donate to the Dixon Hall Music School, “a community-based service that aims to create opportunities for people of all ages to dream, to achieve and to live full and rewarding lives in low-income neighborhoods of Toronto.”
According to Peter Soumalias, founding director of Canada’s Walk of Fame, Drake is the perfect young star to receive the award.
“At 24 years of age, Drake has already achieved what has taken others a lifetime to do,” said Soumalis. “He is kind, smart, talented, philanthropic and driven. He is an inspiring example to all, and we are proud to recognize him this year as our young Canadian making a positive impact.”
Drake also drew praise from the president and CEO of Slaight Communications, Gary Slaight, who applauded the platinum-selling rapper’s admirable determination, according to The Boombox.
“Drake is a true Canadian ambassador who continues to prove that with hard work, dreams can become reality,” said Gary Slaight..
Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards will air on the Canadian TV networks Global and Slice, with further details to be announced at a later date. We guess it’s time for Drake to be the one giving thanks. –nicholas robinson
