Urban fiction lovers and writers are in for a new treat beginning this August. The Urban Lit Review, a new print and digital magazine dedicated to reviewing and discussing black fiction, premiered its first full online issue on Aug. 17. The unveiling took place online during the magazine’s official launch party on their website, UrbanLiteraryReview.com.
Cortnee Howard, Urban Lit Review’s editor-in-chief, said that a black fiction focused magazine is long overdue. Howard was ranked at an impressive No. 23 on HP’s and Blackweb20.com 2010 Top 50 Tech Tastemakers in USA list and she is also a former National Merit Scholar and current voting member of the National Book Critics Circle. The NBCC is the governing body that selects the winners of the coveted National Book Critics Circle Awards in New York each year.
“Contrary to the beliefs held by some, black fiction is not dead,” Howard said in a phone interview. “Readers are hungry for urban fiction. I am so excited to help connect black authors to the readers who love them.”
