Isaias Afewerki, President of Eritrea (Africa)
Age: 65
Assumed office: 4/27/91
Afewerki has a reported death grip around his country by preventing any formal constitutional or human rights protection of the populace. Like its neighboring African nation, Ethiopia, the majority of Eritrea citizens suffer under various stages of malnourishment. At 18, every male is required to enter military service for an indefinite period of time, lest they suffer imprisonment or death. A United States ambassador called the Eritrea dictator “unhinged, cruel, and defiant.”
