Music is a universal language that has the power to close the racial divide. It’s hard to imagine how 1950s America still managed to harbor racial intolerance and discord, even when it came to popular music. But she did. And it was most apparent in Memphis, Tenn., when a white radio DJ named Huey Calhoun had a taste for some brown sugar, Felicia Farrell, a black blues, gospel and soul singer who dreamt of making it big.
Although the aforementioned are fictitious, you can witness their love story inspired by actual events in Memphis: The Musical, playing at Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre Jan. 31 through Feb. 5, 2012.
