Howard Morgan, the black off-duty cop shot 28 times by white officers was sentenced Thursday to 40 years behind bars. Morgan, 61, told the presidingjudge “I am in God’s hands” before hearing the sentence that will keep him incarcerated for the rest of his life.
In 2005 Howard Morgan was off-duty as a detective for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad when he was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Four white policemen claimed that when they attempted to arrest him, he fired his service weapon causing them to shoot him 28 times in self-defense. His wife, Rosalind Morgan, had hoped the shooting death of Trayvon Martin would help shed more light on her husband’s case.
A Change.org petition is still ongoing for Morgan that points out that he was never tested for gun residue to confirm if he even fired a weapon on the morning in question.
His van was later crushed and destroyed without notice or cause before any forensic investigation could be done.
A defiant Rosalind Morgan told CBS yesterday, “They shot him 21 times in the back parts of his body and seven times in the front, and left him there in a puddle of blood. He made it then, and God will allow him to make it again.”
Howard Morgan was facing 80 years behind bars.
