Melvin Van Peeples wrote, directed, starred in and caught an STD while filming Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song in 1973. With a budget of $500,000 raised by himself and with contributions from other blacks, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song grossed $4 million and opened the door for black power films of the 1970s.
