Black Nominees for the 2012 Tony Awards

The 2012 Tony Awards nominees were recently announced in New York. Amongst the nominees, seven African Americans are up for this most coveted award in their respective categories. These individuals all display powerful performances that would captivate any audience.

A majority of these actors and actresses are part of the all-black cast in the revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which received 10 nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. Of the cast members, stars Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis, Phillip Boykin (debuting), and David Alan Grier received nominations.


Veteran actor James Earl Jones was nominated for his leading role in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. Receiving nominations for debut roles were Condola Rashad, daughter of Phylicia Rashad in Stick Fly and actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph in Ghost the Musical.

The Tony Awards will broadcast live from New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Sunday, June 10 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
