Unthread the blanket of the arts and you will discover the connection of people without barriers…

As I spoke with history maker Joan Gray about her experiences with African dance, I could hear the organic appreciation for Muntu dance.

Joan was introduced to African dance by Darlene Blackburn in the early 70’s. She began dance classes with close friend Aylo Talbourn in 1977.

It didn’t take long for Joan to realize the profound influence of Muntu in her life.

Joan explains the impact of dance to rolling out: “(Dance) is one way that people of all races and nationalities can come together. People’s eyes open up and minds are broadened, eyes view new elements through art and culture.”

Joan is currently the president of Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago.

This year, Muntu Dance Theater will present ‘New Voices/ New Vistas on Saturday July 21st at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance: 205 E Randolph.

The performance will take place at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Gala on the Rooftop Terrace of the Harris Theater. Dinner will be provided by Melon Express.
