James Holmes, the 24-year-old suspected of shooting theater patrons during a “Dark Knight Rises” screening in Aurora, Colo., left booby traps in his apartment, creating a problem for law enforcement officials, CNN reports.
Police officers plan to try to enter the apartment on Saturday, July 21. If the traps Holmes left behind cannot be safely disarmed, police may detonate them using robots, CBS News reports.
After being arrested in the theater parking lot, Holmes told police he had rigged his apartment with explosives. Photos of the apartment show that it is crowded with wires, trip wires, jars of liquid and ammunition, said Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates.
“It is a very vexing problem how to enter that apartment safely. I personally have never seen anything like what the pictures show us is in there,” Oates said Friday night.
Robots were sent into the apartment on Friday and came back with video footage and other information that investigators are still reviewing.
Residents of five buildings, including the suspect’s, were evacuated on Friday and a shelter was set up for them at Aurora Central High School. Escorted by police, people were allowed to return to their apartments briefly to grab personal items on Friday evening, the Washington Post reports.
