All too often students find themselves enrolled at four-year institutions confident that their long hours being bookish will pay off in a high-earning career. Not so, says statistics. Fifty-three percent of recent college grads are said to be unemployed or underemployed and working a job that does not require a bachelor’s degree. These days graduates are more likely to work as waiters, waitresses, bartenders and food-service helpers than as engineers, physicists, chemists and mathematicians combined. A big factor in that is the choice of college major. Science and math majors can greatly increase their chances of not only being hired, but making a substantial amount while doing so.
