Blue Ivy’s father, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and Ruth and Stephen Hendel have collaborated once again to produce the Tony Award-winning play, Fela! and Destiny Child’s Michelle Williams has just joined the cast.
Williams will play activist Sandra Izsadore, social activist and love of Fela Kuti. Kuti is the creator of Afrobeat music that exposed the injustice of the Nigerian military dictatorship that rule Africa. The national tour stops in Chicago for six performances, Feb. 19 – 23, 2013 at the Arie Crown Theater (2301 South Lake Shore Dr.).
Chicago native Michelle Williams is pleased to be part of the cast, and clearly she has the blessings of Beyoncé for this Jay-Z-fueled production.
“I am thrilled to join the cast of Fela!,” said Michelle Williams. “This musical journey is one that I’ve wanted to be a part of since first seeing it on stage in 2008. The sounds, the passion and the politics of Fela Kuti have long intrigued me and speak to my heart. I am simply honored.”
Fela! received three 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and features Fela Kuti’s most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones’s visionary staging.
