Bridging 1980s and 2000s dance pop/R&B
In the 1990s, there were lots of female R&B groups, alt-rock bands and earthy singer-songwriters. But dance pop was mostly left to veteran stars from the 1980s like Madonna and Janet. Aaliyah was a bridge between those artists heyday and the dance pop/R&B divas that took over the early 2000s. Her emphasis on stylish choreography was influenced by those 80s pop artists and influenced many that followed her, like Beyonce, Britney Spears, Pink, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
