Alicia Keys ‘can’t sing’: Are R&B fans fixated on voices?

The inimitable Nina Simone would’ve turned 80 years old on Feb. 21, 2013. The legendary jazz, pop, blues, soul singer’s nontraditional singing voice was very much a part of what made her sound so riveting. Its deep, husky resonance stands alone in the pantheon of 20th century American pop vocalists, but there are undoubtedly music fans who didn’t appreciate that beautiful instrument 50 years ago and there are most certainly those who wouldn’t be able to appreciate its uniqueness today.

There are countless other legendary musical figures who weren’t possessed of traditionally “beautiful” singing voices. Classic rockers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young would never be asked to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. There are other icons, like Madonna and Janet Jackson, who’s voices were serviceable, but who’s musical greatness lie in other areas.

Is criticizing Keys’ voice undervaluing every other facet of her artistry. Does being a great R&B artist automatically mean one has to be a great R&B singer?

Keys will always have her critics — as does any artist. But let’s remember that the scope of a recording artist’s talents has never been limited to one facet of their artistry. And maybe having a beautiful voice is overrated.
