Lil Wayne is a human being. But does Cash Money care?

The timing of Wayne’s crisis is worth noting, as well. He is set to release his highly-anticipated album, I Am Not A Human Being II on March 26th. How likely is it that he will be allowed to get the rest he so obviously needs with a major project to promote? Isn’t it necessary for Cash Money to push …Human Being II back to allow the label’s biggest star time to fully recuperate?

Baby claimed that Wayne has just been working himself too hard. If that’s the case, how can anyone in a position of authority allow him to hop back on the proverbial treadmill within a week of being released from intensive care? How the label handles this situation will speak volumes in regards to how much it truly cares about its biggest star.

Lil Wayne has had numerous seizures over the past six months. He has admitted that he is addicted to “Purple Drank” (a popular mixture of alcohol and codeine) in the past. Birdman refers to the star as his “son,” so it’s time for the label head to do something truly fatherly and admit that Weezy needs to take a break and seriously get his health–and his addiction–under control. Rehabilitation, for the sake of Wayne’s health and his family, should be the next step. Instead of denying that his seizure had anything to do with drugs, admit that his body is likely failing him due to long-standing substance abuse. Admit that he isn’t going to slow down on his own and that someone has to intervene for him.

If that doesn’t happen, then Wayne has to distance himself from the enablers that have convinced him that nothing needs to change. He can’t continue living the lifestyle of a “lean”-drankin,’ jet-setting hip-hop star and not have to face the fact that, yes—you are a human being.  A human being with a family that needs you. We romanticize dead artists and turn them into martyrs but the reality is that many of them left behind families that were forever traumatized. Wayne’s children don’t need a mythologized martyr—they need their dad.

It might be fun to pretend that you’re not a human being and that you’re somehow above the rules of mortality and untouchable. But the universe has a way of reminding you just how human you are. Let’s hope that Lil Wayne is paying attention to the signs this time around.
