What compelled you to create this book?
My goal with this book is to help mothers and their sons form a team-based relationship and a foundation for a healthy, respectful bond. For me the relationship is being able to truthfully communicate with one another. You can’t really say what a healthy relationship is for every family because everyone has a different way of raising their kids.
What led to your journey of self discovery with your mom?
I went to the Navy in 2003 where I learned how to assume responsibility. I started to understand that my relationship with my mother made me unique because I did stuff that most guys said women should do such as, cooking, cleaning, and ironing. Growing up without my father definitely made it hard to find my manhood. When I left Iraq, I started to evaluate my life which prompted me to write my mom a letter telling her everything that I felt. When she received the letter, she called me crying. She said, “I wish you would have told me this earlier because I probably would have made a lot of different decisions.” My mom encouraged me to go out and share my story by speaking in the church and various youth programs. My journey as a writer manifested from single mothers asking for advice which has helped to inspire my books.
Why do think children that come from single parent households struggle with their identity?
When I was growing up I had so much more free time because no one was at home. My friends and I were all raised by single mothers so we were out in the streets at all hours of the day and night getting in trouble when the other kids would have to go inside so that their mothers and fathers could cook dinner and check their homework.
How can single moms get a copy of the book?
The book is currently available on Amazon but they are set to release nationwide for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12, at a reduced price of $9.99. I will also be giving the book away for free to low income families who can’t afford to get the book. The first couple of families that visit my website and contact me through email will receive a copy.
