What led you to audition for BET Rip the Runway?
It took a lot of hard work and dedication to take that leap of faith and leave a small town in Virginia to come to NYC and build a substantial career. I attended college at Norfolk State and pursued my degree in acting and communications before I came to NYC because I wanted to know the business side of show business. My first major goal in 2009 was to be part of Rip the Runway. For the past four years, I have been featured in the size sexy portion of the show. BET is the only network giving plus size models a chance to be featured on national television. That’s a very big deal for me.
How have you managed to stay so successful in this industry?
You have to have tough skin and you have to realize that you are representing for all of the curvy girls around the world and know that you exude confidence. When I started in this business I made it a point to dress well and keep my hair and skin maintained for every audition. When I had my audition with Tina Knowles, it was a bit overwhelming to think that her daughter is the biggest super star in the world, but I said to myself my mother thinks I’m the biggest Super star in the world. I can pull from that and get the confidence that I need for the industry to take notice. From that point, I worked with Beyonce and Tina Knowles closely for the Tina Knowles clothing line which was my first big campaign. Now, I am the face of Ashley Stewart. I believe my success is owed to my confidence.
What new projects are you working on?
I will be the host of Tracey Edmonds “Alright TV” new web talk show “Glamorous Grind.” I was introduced to Tracey Edmonds through the Founder of Jones Magazine, Tracy Ferguson who has been like a mentor to me. “The Glamorous Grind” is about living the glamorous Life but also having that determination to grind for what you want. It’s another venture for me. I am so excited to be working with these amazing women.
