Ray Chew understands how to create, manage and execute a huge music production. During his illustrious career, Chew has served as music director for “Showtime at the Apollo,” “American Idol” and the BET Awards.
On June 30, Chew will serve as director for the 2013 BET Awards. He recently spoke with rolling out about his musical journey, memorable moments at the Apollo, and the upcoming BET Awards.
You have accomplished so much in music throughout the years. How did your career began?
My father was a musician. He played piano and he taught me how to play at 6-years-old. I won a scholarship and eventually began playing with Ashford and Simpson. I soon started recording with big artists like Donny Hathaway, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Teddy Pendergrass, Chaka Khan. My first television show was working on the “Saturday Night Live” band during the Eddie Murphy years. Afterwards, I started working with the Apollo.
What memories stick out most about your time at the Apollo?
There were many great memories while working with Steve Harvey. It was great to see new talent before they became huge superstars; amateur night was special. A hostile crowd would boo anyone if the talent wasn’t up to par.
Along with the BET Awards, what other projects are you working on?
I just finished doing “Miss USA” for NBC, the pageant show and of course, the BET Awards. This year, we’re moving to the Nokia Theater. I’ve also received a call from TD Jakes to produce the closing segment of the MegaFest down in Texas. My wife, Vivian Scott, will direct the artists and I will produce the music. It should be a great time.
